Cancellation guide
Stop a UPI AutoPay mandate
UPI AutoPay lets a merchant debit your account on a schedule after you approve it once in a UPI app. You can pause or cancel it yourself, usually in a minute.
Steps
- Cancel the subscription with the merchant first, so the service ends cleanly and they don't ask you to set up a new mandate. See cancelling with the merchant.
- Open the UPI app you used to approve it (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, or your bank's app). Look for a section named AutoPay, Mandates or Manage payments, often under your profile or the payment settings.
- Find the mandate by merchant name or amount, and choose Cancel (sometimes called Revoke). Pause only stops it for a while.
- Approve with your UPI PIN if asked, and save the confirmation.
If you can't find it
- Check the other UPI apps linked to the same bank account; the mandate lives in the app where it was approved.
- Look for the pre-debit notification (SMS or app alert) that usually arrives before each AutoPay debit; it names the merchant and app.
- Ask your bank's customer care to help you identify and cancel the mandate.
- Cancelling a loan EMI, insurance premium or SIP mandate stops the payment, not the loan, policy or investment. Missed payments can bring penalties, a lapsed policy or a lower credit score. Talk to the lender or provider first.
- Keep every confirmation: screenshots, emails and reference numbers. You will need them if a charge comes back.
- Check your next statement to make sure the debit has actually stopped.
App menus and bank processes change and differ between providers; if a step doesn't match what you see, your bank's or app's help section or customer care can point you to the current option. This guide is general information, not financial or legal advice.
