Cancellation guide
Cancel a NACH or ECS mandate
NACH (and the older ECS) is a bank mandate that lets a company debit your account directly. It is common for loan EMIs, insurance, SIPs, and memberships such as gyms. The mandate is held by your bank, so cancelling usually goes through the bank.
Steps
- Tell the company you are stopping the service, in writing (email is fine), and ask them to withdraw the mandate on their side. Note the date.
- Find the mandate details. Your bank's app or net banking may list active mandates; each has a reference number called a UMRN. The company's original mandate form or welcome email may also show it.
- Ask your bank to cancel the mandate. Many banks let you do this in net banking (look for Mandates, NACH or E-mandate). Otherwise use customer care or a branch, with the UMRN, the company name and the amount.
- Get a cancellation reference and keep it with your email to the company.
If a debit still goes through
- Contact your bank with the cancellation reference and ask them to reverse the debit and block the mandate.
- Contact the company with your written cancellation and ask for a refund.
- Cancelling a loan EMI, insurance premium or SIP mandate stops the payment, not the loan, policy or investment. Missed payments can bring penalties, a lapsed policy or a lower credit score. Talk to the lender or provider first.
- Keep every confirmation: screenshots, emails and reference numbers. You will need them if a charge comes back.
- Check your next statement to make sure the debit has actually stopped.
App menus and bank processes change and differ between providers; if a step doesn't match what you see, your bank's or app's help section or customer care can point you to the current option. This guide is general information, not financial or legal advice.
